November 08, 2011; Metropolitan Opera; Satyagraha

The Met brought back this production which was new in 2008. The work brought a number of new audience members, as did the performance of the Glass-scored movie, Koyaanisqatsi last week. The opera is like a slow motion pageant which makes reference to incidents in Gandhi's life but doesn't really dramatize them. The piece works if the music works (true for all operas). I was generally involved in the first two acts. I knew from my report on the 2008 performance that the third act was wanting. I considered leaving after the second act since I would be back on the 15th. I stayed and, instead, slept through most of the third act. The concluding scene is a powerful metaphor for how Gandhi's teaching was picked up in this country.

I was in the second row of the Orchestra where I could easily see all of the singers. That made the staging quite involving even though there was little interaction between the performers.
